Lucille Pierce Family Literacy and Resource Center Book Giveaway
The Free Book Giveaway on the porch of the Lucile Pierce Family Literacy Center at 103 East Ida Avenue in Opp will begin March 1 and is open to the public.
All paperbacks, novels, reference, hardbacks and children’s books are free to the public and available from sun up to sundown daily.
This is this the 16th annual book giveaway for the Literacy Center.
Covington County Conservation District Scholarship
Applications for a $500 scholarship sponsored by the Alabama Conservation District Employees Association. Applicant must be a U.S. citizen, high school senior, and living in the state of Alabama. Applications may be picked up a the District office located at 23952 AL HWY 55 Ste 1. Deadline to receive completed applications in the District office is March 9. MMH Preventative & Wellness Class
Free educational class on wellness screenings, preventative health measures, proper nutrition to maintain a healthy lifestyle. March 13, from 8:30 am – 10:00 am at the Mizell Wellness Center. The program will be presented by Lisa Adamson, CRNP. Call 334-493-5511 to register for the class.
AMVETS Post 23 Picnic
The Veterans of AMVETS Post 23 of Opp will be holding a picnic on March 31 at our service center located at 203 MLK Drive for our area Viet Nam Veterans and family members. Our endeavor is to thank and honor Veterans of Viet Nam, including personnel held as POWs or listed as MIA for their service and sacrifice on behalf of the United States. We also want to thank and honor the families of these Veterans. We wish to invite any Veterans and their families.
AMVETS Post 23 Spring Shotgun Give-Away
The Spring fund-raiser will be a Henry 410 Remington shotgun (H018-410). Lever action, smooth barrel, Fine Hickory wooden stock and forend. Chambered for 2.5 inch 410 shells. Complete with three screw in chokes. Tickets are a donation of $5 each or 5 for $20. The drawing will be on Mon., May 26. Plus a chance for a $250 Walmart gift card or a $250 IGA Grocery Certificate. Ticket are available from Post 23, AMVETS center and Opp Gun Shop.
The drawing for the gun will be held at the AMVETS Service Center at 203 MLK Dr, Opp, during the AMVETS Memorial day activities on Mon., May 26 at noon. The meeting is open to the public and you do not have to be present to win. Winner must be over 18 yrs old and meet all state and federal laws to legally own a gun and pass a background check
Geneva County Pageant
Sat., April 14 at the Samson Municipal Complex.  Baby Miss (0-23mo), Tiny Miss (2-3), Mini Miss (4-6), Young Junior Miss (7-9) and Junior Miss (10-12) will be at 11:00am.  These five divisions are OPEN to a 100 mile radius and there will be NO interview, on-stage question or practice.  (NOTE:  if you are in the 4-6 age group and want to have Interview and on-stage question, enter the 4-6 group listed below which provides that option.)
Future Little Miss (4-6), Little Miss (1st grade), Teen Miss (13-16) and Miss (17-21) will be at 7:00pm.  Little Miss and Miss are CLOSED Peanut preliminaries (must live OR attend school in Geneva County).  Future and Teen are OPEN to a 100 mile radius.  All four divisions WILL have Interview, on-stage and two practices.
Winners in ALL divisions will have the opportunity to ride in the National Peanut Festival Parade.  Applications are available in area businesses but may be received via email.  For  additional information, contact Lauren Fountain (334/796-7715) or Gwenn Dillard (334/449-2599).
Quilter’s Guild interest meeting
Opp is blessed to have many quilters and sewing enthusiasts. Several have expressed interest in starting a local quilting guild. An organizational meeting has been planned for March 8 at 6 p.m. at the Historical Society building adjacent to the city pool, on Whaley St. We will have coffee, meet and discuss plans to start this group. We are excited and are hoping this will provide many the chance to meet other local quilters, learn from one another, and have fun!
Southeast Alabama Rural Planning Organization
The Southeast Alabama Rural Planning Organization (RPO) will hold the following meetings:
1.    Local Public Forums- Covington County – March 12, 3 p.m. – Covington County Administration Building (Andalusia), Small Conference Room or Coffee County – March 15, 3 p.m. – Coffee County Community Room (New Brockton)
2.    Technical Coordinating Committee (TCC), April 3, 2 p.m. – Houston County Administration Building (Dothan), 6th Floor Conference Room
3.    Policy Committee, Thursday, April 5, 2 p.m. – Houston County Administration Building (Dothan), 6th Floor Conference Room
The scope of the meetings is to discuss transportation safety issues, regional transportation project updates, and coordinated public transportation issues, including the regional coordinated transportation public transit plan, which identifies transportation needs of individuals with disabilities, older adults, and people with low incomes, provides strategies for meeting these local needs, and prioritizes transportation services for funding and implementation.
The RPO was established to develop a transportation planning process for the rural areas of southeastern Alabama and provides a formal link between the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) and the local governments.  The counties served by the RPO include Barbour, Coffee, Covington, and areas of Dale, Geneva, Henry, and Houston not served by the Southeast Wiregrass Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO).  The RPO provides government officials and citizens in these counties an opportunity to receive information and advise the ALDOT on road, bridge, and other transportation projects.

Covington County NAACP March Membership Drive

Meeting will be held March 10th and 24th at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church on Bond Street. Please turn in your application and $30 fee. Please call Interim President Aaron Bogen at 764-2071 for more information.

Opp Public Library Spring Book Sale

Spring Book Sale will be held March 12-16 from 9-5 in the newly renovated Community Room. All books are $2 and under.
