A Family Graveside Service will be conducted at 10:30 am, Friday, July 3, 2020 in Peaceful Acres Memorial Gardens. Reverend Wayne Sharpe will be officiating with Wyatt Funeral Home directing. Bettye Jo Elmore was born on May 9, 1926 in Walker County, Alabama, to the late Clarence L. Elmore and Ruby Bragg Elmore.  She was genuinely a coal miner’s daughter, raised in the coal fields of west Jefferson County and Walker County where her father was a miner and mine foreman. She was athletic and a good student – skipping a grade in school – and fiercely protective of her younger brother.
After graduating from West Jefferson High School in the midst of World War II, she trained as a technician in the National Weather Service. That brought her to Montgomery, Alabama where she met and married Henry Morgan in 1946.
In 1948 they moved to Opp, Alabama where Henry started a successful tire business and gasoline distributorship and raised two boys.
Bettye was active in the Opp Community and a member of First Baptist Church of Opp for 72 years, active in Sunday School and other church activities until her decline in health some years ago. She was a championship golfer, a gifted seamstress, an artist, and made the best buttermilk biscuits the world has ever known – cut from rolled out dough with a Minute Maid frozen orange juice can. She will be remembered as a loving wife and caregiver, a cherished mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
She is survived by her son, Henry S. “Mike” Morgan Jr and wife Bonnie; brother, Charles Elmore; sister-in-law, Joyce Morgan Klein (Gunther); daughter-in law, Margaret Morgan; four grandchildren; Amy Morgan Schnorrenberg (Scott); James Michael Morgan (Sarah); Cari Morgan Parker (Wade); and Sara Morgan Jones (Levi); and eleven great-grandchildren, Noah and Sophie Schnorrenberg, Will and Elise Morgan, Stella Gilbreath, Ryder and Lucy Jo Hartzog, Kollins Parker, and Mamie, Amelia and Mick Jones. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 63 years, Henry S. Morgan, Sr., and son, Richard E. “Ricky” Morgan.
The family wishes to express its deep appreciation for the kind and compassionate care from the nurses and staff of Opp Health and Rehab under extreme circumstances.
