Nell Cotney Smith

Nell Cotney Smith was born in the Curtis Community on May 29, 1930, to Odell and Lena Young Cotney and passed away Tuesday, August 25, 2020 at the Opp home she and her late husband, Cecil, built in 1957. She was 90.
In addition to her daughters, Carolanne (Jim) Walker and Jamie (Al) Creamer, she and Cecil raised three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, and she cherished the title of Mama Nell.
She also was Mrs. Smith to generations of Opp Elementary School students during her 25-plus years as a substitute teacher, a role she filled until she was 82. She was a longtime faithful member of the Opp Church of Christ, where she taught the 2 and 3 year-old class, and her love language was serving others.
She was a graduate of Opp High School and married James Cecil Smith of Opp March 2, 1948. They were married 58 years, until his death in 2006.
She is survived by her daughters; grandchildren Jon Duffell, Chad (Dawn) Duffell, Gina Parker, Kyle Creamer and Vince (Barbara Ann) Creamer; and 10 great-grandchildren and several great-great grandchildren. Survivors also include her three sisters, Betty Gautney, Daisy Martin and Pat (Dan) Presley.
Funeral services will be held at 11 am Friday, August 28, 2020 from Wyatt Funeral Home Chapel in Opp. AL. A private burial will follow in Peaceful Acres Memorial Gardens.
