Online sexual predator arrested, to be extradited to Covington County

On August 31, a man from Barbour County,  West Virginia was arrested after sending explicit images to someone he believed was a 14-year-old female in Covington County.

According to Covington County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division, through a comprehensive investigation,  West Virginia troopers arrested Letcher Shaver, 66, of Belington, West Virginia for eight counts of transmitting obscene material.

According to Investigator Beth Johnson, Shaver contacted the person he believed to be a 14-year-old female via social media.

Throughout the conversation, Shaver planned to meet the 14-year-old in a hotel and even move to Alabama to be with the person.

During a different conversation, Shaver asked about a 13-year-old friend to participate in unnatural sexual activities.

Shaver is being held in Tygart Valley Regional Jail. He is awaiting extradition to the Covington County Jail.

“We will search out these perverts that threaten the safety of our children,” said Covington County Sheriff Blake Turman. “Use caution and teach your kids to avoid these deranged heathens.”

Turman continues, “I commend the investigators involved in this arrest and I appreciate the assistance of the West Virginia state Police.”
