Connell Ray Coffey

April 7, 1968 – February 6, 2021
Connell Coffey, originally from Geneva, died tragically February 6, 2021 while attempting to rescue lives in a fire at his home in Rhode Island. He was 52 years old.
He is survived by his father, Doyle R. Coffey of Hartford, Alabama and Oklahoma City; his grandmother, Rebecca J. Coffey (MeeMaw) of Headland, Alabama; his uncle, Dr. William Mike Howell of Birmingham, Alabama; his uncle, Clyde R. Coffey of Hutchinson Island, Fl.; and his sister, Amie Coffey of Geneva, Al. and Westerly, Rhode Island.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Diane Howell Coffey, his brother Phillip (Pete) Coffey, his grandparents Phelon and Myrtice (Vickers) Howell, all of Geneva; his grandfather Carthel R. Coffey (PawPaw), and his aunt, Kathy Haller, both of Headland, Alabama.
Connell was a graduate of the 1986 Class of Geneva High School, where he was an all-conference athlete. He attended Wallace College in Dothan where he received a tennis scholarship and played on the Wallace baseball team. His athletic ability continued throughout his adult life as he enjoyed playing softball, golf, tennis, darts, and pool.
He had a keen wit and was a great storyteller. He loved oldies music and working in his woodshop.
He was also an avid fan of Alabama football.
Connell will be remembered for his humor, his athleticism, his love for his family, and for his bravery.
A memorial gathering will be held at the River Oaks Golf Course Clubhouse in Geneva on Sunday, March 7. The family will greet guests from noon – 4pm. There will be an informal service at 1pm, and anyone who would like to share a story or sentiment is encouraged to do so.
Food and beverages will be provided.
All friends and family are welcome to join us as remember our son, brother, nephew, and friend.
