Local landmark burns, total loss

A popular landmark for the Opp community burned down late Monday evening.

Doc’s Country Store and Restaurant was a total loss in the Monday night fire. Around 9:30 PM the call came for mutual assistance from Opp Fire Department to all surrounding fire stations to fight the blaze. By 11:00 PM Opp Fire Chief Cory Spurlin advised that the main building was a total loss. At this point fire departments were focused on saving the surrounding buildings of the Boothe Family Museum.

Doc’s Country Store has been serving the area for over 15 years, selling clothing, shoes, gift items and a hot lunch. After lunch patrons were invited to take a step back in time by strolling through history at their Boothe Family Museum.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

So sad. This hurts the hearts of all of us that loved to visit, eat a meal, and enjoy the Boothe family memorabilia.

I went through Opp, years ago and fell in love with it. I’m so sorry for your loss.
