Covington Veterans Foundation seeks help documenting local veteran experiences in Vietnam

The Covington Veterans Foundation is seeking the public’s help in gathering memories of local Vietnam veterans for preservation.

Until the First Gulf War in 1990 when overseas long-distance phone calls became widespread, the only connection to home for service members to their loved ones was ones was through the mail. The Foundation is seeking veterans or family members who are willing to share those letters. The Foundation will scan the letters and return them. If permission is given, facsimiles will be displayed in the November Covington Veterans Foundation exhibit at City Hall.

If you have letters to share, please contact Michele Gerlach at 334.428.1143.

The Foundation also would appreciate loans of local veterans’ keepsakes and collectibles from their Vietnam experiences. Please contact Robert Evers at 334.222.2727 or Michele Gerlach at 334.428.1143 if you have anything to loan or for further information.

Formed in 2019, the Covington Veterans Foundation is a 501c3 organization. Its mission is to preserve, recognize and honor the service and sacrifice of former and current members of the United States Armed Forces who have lived and worked in Covington County, Alabama.

Board members include John Vick, chairman; Ben Bowden, president; Teresa Ward, Terry Powell, Harold Burnham, Robert Evers, Sammy Glover, Brenda Gouge, Carol Mullis, Doris Tyler, Sue Bass Wilson, Linda Moore, and John Roach.

The Foundation also works with the City of Andalusia to display veterans tribute banners during November. All banners previously purchased will be displayed again this year. Additional banners can be purchased from September 27-October 9.
