A Day of Hope scheduled for Saturday

A Day of Hope, hosted by The Angel of Hope for Covington County, is set for  Saturday, Nov. 19 beginning at 8 a.m. and lasting until 2 p.m.  It begins with a 5K run and continues with the opening of a Holiday Market located in The Farmer’s Market at 256 historical Central St. in Andalusia.

There will be more than 40 vendors at the market offering a wide variety of items. There is also an online bake sale beginning November 16. And baked goods will be available in a sweet shop during the Holiday Market.

The Angel of Hope is a memorial dedicated to the memory of deceased children and has its origin in a fictional story, “The Christmas Angel, written by Richard Paul Evans and made into a movie. There are now more than 100 of the statues in the United States.

Carol Moore of Andalusia, who lost her grandson, John David Stroud, in an accident in 2021, spearheaded the efforts to bring an Angel of Hope statue to Covington County after seeing two of the statues, one in LaGrange, Georgia and one in Dothan.

“My hope is that the Angel of Hope for Covington County will be a place that offers hope and comfort to anyone who has lost a child,” Moore said.

Working with the assistance of the City of Andalusia, a location for the memorial was chosen. Its home will be inside Robinson Memorial Park on Church Street.

Saturday’s Day of Hope will help raise funds for completing the placement of the statue.

“I hope this memorial is healing for those who are feeling the sadness of losing a child and also serves as a reminder to appreciate all of the children we love so much,” she said. “We want this to be a place of comfort, remembrance and love.”
