Edna Pearl Hall Courson

Mrs. Edna Pearl Hall Courson, age 76, of Opp, AL passed away, Wednesday, January 24, 2024.

Mrs. Courson is survived by her husband, John W. Courson; daughters, Laura Lynne Courson Fernandez & husband, Mike, and Susan Courson-Smith & husband, H.B.; sons, John W. Courson II & wife, Dawn, and Matthew Courson; sisters, Evelyn Craven and Peggy Strawder and grandchildren, Kristen Shepard Topping & husband, Brad, Bren Shepard, Nicholas Shepard, Emily V. Courson, John W. “Wil” Courson III, Ellie Pearl Courson, and Sloane Harper Courson. She was preceded in death by her parents, Annie Pearl Morgan Hall and George Broward Hall; and sisters, Hazel Box, Betty Stafford and Mary Windham.

Edna was a devoted wife to John for over sixty years –  he was the love of  her life.  She was an incredible and loving mother to Laura Lynne, Susan, Johnny, and Matthew. She was a beloved “Giegee” to seven grandchildren (Kristen, Bren, Nick, Emily, Wil, Ellie, and Sloane) who were the lights of her life.   She was a cherished sister and a much-loved aunt to scores of nieces and nephews.  After being diagnosed with Leiomyosarcoma in 2018,  she moved into warrior mode and bravely fought this tenacious disease.  In her final hours in Hospice care, she surprised her family with one last set of instructions and a request.  Edna told her beloved husband, children, and grandchildren to be good to each other and to take care of each other.  Everyone in the room said yes, and she then said “promise.”   Each person in the room then individually responded with “promise.”  That her final request was to make sure her family continued to love and to take care of each other truly sums up the beautiful essence of Edna.

Funeral services for Mrs. Edna Pearl Hall Courson will be held at 11:30 am Saturday, January 27, 2024 at Wyatt Funeral Home Chapel with burial following in Peaceful Acres Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held from 10:00 am until service time. Edna’s nephew, Rev. Stephen Windham, will officiate and friend Cindy Evers will share a tribute. Serving as pallbearers will be grandsons, Bren Shepard, Nicholas Shepard, Wil Courson and Brad Topping, along with sons-in-law, Michael Fernandez and H.B. Smith.

Following the service, the family invites attendees to join them at the home of Laura Lynne Courson Fernandez (28805 Hwy 84, Opp, AL 36467) to continue the celebration of Edna’s life.

The family would like to offer their heartfelt gratitude to Lindsey Smith Eckert who began as Edna’s caregiver and quickly became a beloved member of the Courson family. Her kindness will never be forgotten.
